Superimposed ice

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009409

A layer of ice that forms on the surface of an existing ice crystal or hailstone through the accretion of supercooled water droplets. This process is a primary mechanism for the growth of hailstones in thunderstorms. The texture and density of superimposed ice can vary depending on the temperature and liquid water content of the cloud.
