Firn
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005593
Granular, compacted snow that has survived at least one summer melt season but has not yet been transformed into glacial ice. It forms as overlying snow compresses and recrystallizes the older snow layers. The density of firn ranges from approximately 0.4 to 0.8 grams per cubic centimeter, representing an intermediate stage between fresh snow and solid ice.
(Snow) In hydrologic terms, old snow on top of glaciers, granular and compact and not yet converted into ice. It is a transitional stage between snow and ice.
Also called Neve.
