Ice crust

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006405

A hard, brittle layer of ice that forms on the surface of snow, often due to melting and refreezing cycles or the compaction of snow by wind. This layer can support a person's weight or break under it, affecting travel and wildlife. It differs from rime ice, which forms from supercooled water droplets freezing onto surfaces.
