Sun crust

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009383

A layer of hardened snow on the surface of a snowpack, formed by the melting and refreezing of snow due to solar radiation. During the day, sunlight melts the surface snow, and as temperatures drop overnight, this meltwater refreezes into a firm, icy layer. This crust can be strong enough to support weight or brittle, posing challenges for winter travel and affecting snow stability.
