Ice layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006421
A distinct stratum of ice within a snowpack or on a surface, formed by the refreezing of meltwater or by freezing rain. These layers can impede water infiltration into the ground and create hazardous walking or driving conditions. In snowpacks, ice layers can contribute to avalanche formation by providing a weak shear plane.
