Surface hoar
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009436
A type of frost crystal that forms on cold surfaces, such as snowpacks, when water vapor from the air deposits directly as ice. It develops under clear, calm, and cold conditions with a strong temperature gradient above the snow. These feathery crystals can create a weak layer within a snowpack, increasing avalanche risk.
