Hoar crystal

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006260

An ice crystal that forms on surfaces when water vapor in the air sublimates directly onto a cold object, without first passing through a liquid phase. These delicate, feathery ice formations are common on cold, clear nights with high humidity and light winds. Hoar frost is a common example of hoar crystals forming on the ground or vegetation.
