Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006261

A deposit of ice crystals that forms on surfaces when the air temperature is below freezing and the dew point is also below freezing. It occurs when water vapor in the air sublimates directly onto a cold surface, such as grass, trees, or car windshields, without first forming liquid water. The crystals are typically white, feathery, and delicate.
