Crevasse hoar
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004755
Large, delicate ice crystals that form within the open spaces of a crevasse in a glacier. These crystals grow through the deposition of water vapor onto existing ice surfaces in a cold, moist, and relatively still air environment. Crevasse hoar can contribute to the instability of snowpacks when buried by subsequent snowfall.
