Ice flowers

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006414

Delicate, intricate ice crystals that grow on the surface of thin, newly formed sea ice or lake ice, resembling floral patterns. They form when water vapor from the relatively warmer water below rises through cracks in the ice and freezes upon contact with the much colder air above. These formations are a type of hoar frost, often observed in calm, very cold conditions.
