Ice band
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006399
A distinct layer or stratum of ice within a larger body of snow or ice, such as a glacier or an ice sheet. These bands can form due to variations in snow accumulation, melt-freeze cycles, or the presence of impurities. The study of ice bands provides insights into past climatic conditions and glacial dynamics.
Layers of ice that form within snowpacks or on surfaces, often due to cycles of melting and refreezing. These bands can impede water infiltration into the ground or create unstable layers within a snowpack, increasing avalanche risk. They are a common feature in seasonal snow cover in mountainous regions.
