Compact differencing

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004543

A class of numerical methods used in computational fluid dynamics, including atmospheric modeling, to approximate spatial derivatives with high accuracy on a compact stencil. These schemes involve solving a system of equations for the derivatives at each grid point, rather than explicitly calculating them. Compact differencing offers improved spectral resolution compared to standard finite difference methods, making it suitable for resolving small-scale atmospheric features.
