Commutator
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004542
An electrical switch in a motor or generator that periodically reverses the direction of current flow in an armature. In meteorological instrumentation, commutators are found in devices with rotating components, such as certain types of anemometers, to transfer electrical signals between the rotating sensor and the stationary data-logging equipment. Modern instruments often use non-contact methods like optical encoders or slip rings to avoid the mechanical wear associated with commutators.
