Leapfrog differencing

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006907

A numerical integration scheme used in atmospheric models to approximate time derivatives. It calculates the value of a variable at a future time step using values from the current and previous time steps, effectively "leapfrogging" over the current state. This method is conditionally stable and requires a small time step to prevent numerical instability.
