Least squares

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006908

A statistical method for fitting a mathematical model to a set of observed data by minimizing the sum of the squares of the residuals. The residual for each data point is the difference between the observed value and the value predicted by the model. This technique is widely used in meteorology for data analysis, calibration of instruments, and parameter estimation in atmospheric models.
