Residual
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008525
The difference between an observed or measured value and the value predicted by a model or statistical forecast. Residuals represent the portion of the data that the model fails to explain, and their analysis is a key method for diagnosing model performance and identifying systematic errors. A plot of residuals against predicted values should ideally show no discernible pattern, indicating that the model has captured the underlying relationship.
