Forecast error
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005711
The difference between a predicted meteorological variable and the observed value of that variable at the forecast time and location. This discrepancy quantifies the accuracy of a forecast, with smaller errors indicating better performance. Forecast errors can be systematic, representing a consistent bias, or random, reflecting unpredictable atmospheric variability.
