Kaolinite

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002084

A common clay mineral, a hydrous aluminum silicate, formed by the chemical weathering of feldspars and other silicate minerals. In petroleum reservoirs, it occurs as a detrital component or as an authigenic mineral that precipitates from pore fluids. Because its book-like crystal structure can block pore throats, the presence of kaolinite reduces reservoir permeability and can cause formation damage during drilling or stimulation.
