Sodium silicate
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003495
An inorganic compound, usually supplied as the water solution called water glass, used in drilling fluids to stabilize reactive shales and to plug permeable zones. Dissolved silicate gels or precipitates when it meets calcium or magnesium ions or when the pH drops, so it seals pore throats and microfractures at the borehole wall and limits shale hydration. In cementing it is used as a lightweight extender that also accelerates setting.
