Octanol
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002586
An eight-carbon alcohol, specifically 1-octanol, used as a defoamer or foam suppressant in drilling fluids. Its low surface tension and insolubility in water allow it to spread across the foam lamellae, causing them to thin and break. Octanol is effective in both water-based and oil-based mud systems.
