Octyl alcohol
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002587
A type of higher-molecular-weight alcohol, also known as 1-octanol, used as a defoamer in drilling fluids. It reduces the surface tension of bubbles that form in the mud due to agitation or gas influx, causing them to coalesce and break. Octyl alcohol is effective in both water-based and oil-based muds and is typically added in small concentrations, measured in pounds per barrel or liters per cubic meter.
