Consolidation
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000820
The process by which loose, fine-grained sediments, such as clay or silt, decrease in volume and increase in density due to the expulsion of pore water under increasing overburden pressure. This occurs as new layers of sediment accumulate above, compacting the underlying material. Consolidation reduces porosity and permeability, affecting fluid flow in reservoirs.
