Lithostatic pressure
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002194
The pressure exerted on a rock at a specific depth due to the weight of all the overlying rock and any fluids within it. Also known as overburden pressure, it is calculated by integrating the bulk density of the overlying formations from the surface down to the point of interest. This pressure typically increases at a gradient of approximately 1.0 pound per square inch per foot of depth.
