Lithosphere
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002193
The rigid, outermost shell of a terrestrial planet, composed of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle. It is broken into large tectonic plates that move slowly over the asthenosphere, driving processes like continental drift, seafloor spreading, and subduction. The thickness of the Earth's lithosphere varies from about 50 km in oceanic regions to over 200 km beneath continents.
