Lithosphere

The rigid outermost shell of a terrestrial planet, composed of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle. It is divided into tectonic plates that move across the Earth's surface. The thickness of the lithosphere varies, ranging from about 5 km under oceanic crust to 200 km under continental crust.
