Plate tectonics
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002820
The scientific theory describing the large-scale motion of Earth's lithosphere, which is broken into several major and minor plates. These plates move relative to each other, causing earthquakes, volcanism, and mountain building, and influencing the formation and distribution of sedimentary basins where hydrocarbons accumulate. Plate movements are driven by convection currents in the mantle.
