Collision

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000752

The convergence and suturing of two continental plates, a process that deforms rock layers and builds mountain ranges. This tectonic event creates intense compressional stress, resulting in the folding, faulting, and metamorphism of sedimentary basins that may have existed along the plate margins. The resulting fold-and-thrust belts, such as the Zagros Mountains or the foothills of the Rockies, are major settings for hydrocarbon exploration, containing numerous structural traps for oil and gas.
