Colloid

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000753

A substance consisting of particles dispersed throughout another substance, where the dispersed particles are larger than individual molecules but small enough not to settle out rapidly. In drilling fluids, colloidal particles, such as bentonite clay, contribute significantly to viscosity and gel strength. These particles typically range in size from 1 nanometer to 1 micrometer.
