Lyophilic colloid
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002242
A type of colloid in which the dispersed particles have a strong affinity for the continuous phase, or dispersion medium. In water-based drilling fluids, bentonite clay and certain polymers are lyophilic colloids because they readily hydrate and disperse in water to form a stable, viscous suspension. This attraction to the liquid phase is what gives these additives their ability to build viscosity and create a filter cake.
