Continuous phase

The fluid medium that surrounds and suspends the dispersed phase in an emulsion or suspension. In a water-based drilling fluid, water is the continuous phase, while in an oil-based mud, oil serves this role. The properties of the continuous phase largely dictate the overall characteristics of the drilling fluid.
