The fluid phase, either liquid or gas, that carries suspended solids or dissolved components within a drilling fluid system. This continuous phase provides the primary hydrostatic pressure and transports cuttings from the wellbore. Water-based and oil-based fluids are the two main types of drilling fluid media.
