External phase
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001361
The continuous liquid phase in an emulsion, which surrounds and suspends the dispersed internal phase. In an oil-in-water emulsion, water is the external phase, while in a water-in-oil emulsion, oil is the external phase. The properties of the external phase largely dictate the overall characteristics of the drilling fluid, such as its viscosity and filtration behavior.
