Plateau
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004413
An extensive area of elevated, relatively flat-lying land that is bounded on at least one side by a steep slope or escarpment dropping to lower ground. Plateaus form through geologic uplift, lava flows, or erosion of surrounding softer rocks. Oceanic plateaus are large, submerged regions of thick crust that rise significantly above the surrounding abyssal plain, such as the Kerguelen Plateau in the southern Indian Ocean.
