The gently sloping submerged margin of a continent, extending from the coastline to the shelf break, where the slope steepens significantly. This shallow marine environment is characterized by relatively low energy and can accumulate thick sequences of sedimentary rocks. Many hydrocarbon reservoirs are found in ancient shelf deposits.
