Passive margin
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002719
A continental margin that is not an active plate boundary, characterized by a broad continental shelf, slope, and rise formed by the accumulation of sediments. These margins develop after continental rifting and seafloor spreading, where the continental crust thins and subsides as it moves away from a spreading center. Passive margins are often associated with large sedimentary basins that can host substantial hydrocarbon accumulations.
