Continental shelf

The submerged extension of a continent, forming a relatively shallow, gently sloping seabed that extends from the coastline to the shelf break. This area is typically less than 200 meters deep and is characterized by thick sedimentary deposits. Many offshore oil and gas fields are located on continental shelves due to favorable conditions for hydrocarbon accumulation.
