Relating to the shallow marine environment extending from the low-tide line to the edge of the continental shelf, at a water depth of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This zone receives ample sunlight, supporting abundant marine life, and is where many clastic and carbonate sediments that form petroleum reservoirs are deposited. The resulting rocks include sandstones, shales, and limestones characteristic of a nearshore, shelf environment.
