Rift
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003164
A linear zone where the Earth's crust and lithosphere are being pulled apart, resulting in extensional tectonics. Rifting can lead to the formation of grabens, horsts, and sedimentary basins that often become sites for hydrocarbon accumulation. The East African Rift System is a prominent example of an active continental rift.
