Horst

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001860

An uplifted block of crustal rock bounded on at least two sides by normal faults, forming a topographic high relative to adjacent grabens. These structures result from extensional tectonic forces that stretch and thin the Earth's crust, causing blocks to move vertically. Horsts can form structural traps for hydrocarbons if sealed by impermeable strata.
