Sheen test

A qualitative test performed to detect the presence of oil or hydrocarbons in drilling fluid, cuttings, or produced water. A small sample is placed on water, and the formation of an iridescent film (sheen) indicates the presence of hydrocarbons. This test is often used for environmental compliance and to identify hydrocarbon shows during drilling.
