Bottoms-up mud sample

A sample of drilling fluid taken at the surface after it has circulated from the bottom of the wellbore. This sample represents the fluid that was exposed to the formation at the deepest point of the well. It is analyzed for gas content, cuttings, and other indicators of downhole conditions.
