Sheen

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003370

A thin, iridescent film of free oil that spreads across a water surface, indicating hydrocarbon contamination in drilling fluids or cuttings. The appearance of a sheen during operations with water-based mud signals an influx of formation oil or contamination from lubricants. Environmental regulations, such as the U.S. EPA's static sheen test, prohibit the discharge of any materials that cause a visible film or discoloration on the receiving water.
