Basin

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000290

A large-scale depression in the Earth's crust where sediments accumulate over geological time, often forming thick sequences of sedimentary rocks. These geological structures are the primary locations for the generation and accumulation of hydrocarbons due to the presence of source rocks, reservoirs, and seals. Basins can vary in size from tens to thousands of square kilometers and are classified by their tectonic setting.
