Sedimentary basin

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003305

A large-scale depression in the Earth's crust where substantial thicknesses of sediments have accumulated over geological time. These basins form through tectonic processes such as crustal stretching, flexure from loading, or faulting, creating accommodation space for clastic, carbonate, and evaporite deposits. The burial and heating of organic-rich source rocks within these basins are prerequisites for the generation of oil and gas.
