Asthenosphere
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000203
The ductile, semi-fluid layer of the Earth's upper mantle, located beneath the lithosphere, extending from approximately 100 km to 700 km depth. It is characterized by lower viscosity and allows for the movement of tectonic plates above it. Convection currents within the asthenosphere drive plate tectonics, influencing basin formation and hydrocarbon accumulation.
