Isostasy
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002052
The state of gravitational equilibrium between the Earth's lithosphere and asthenosphere, such that the lithosphere "floats" at an elevation determined by its thickness and density. This principle explains why continental crust, being thicker and less dense, stands higher than oceanic crust. Isostatic adjustments occur in response to changes in crustal load, such as glaciation or erosion.
