Isostatic correction

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002054

A correction applied to gravity data to account for the gravitational effect of large, low-density crustal blocks, such as mountain roots, that float in the denser mantle below. This adjustment is based on the principle of isostasy, which posits that the Earth's crust maintains a state of gravitational equilibrium. The correction removes long-wavelength variations in the gravity field related to deep compensation masses, isolating anomalies caused by shallower geological structures.
