Mohorovicic discontinuity

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002416

The boundary separating the Earth's crust from the underlying mantle, characterized by a distinct increase in seismic wave velocity. This discontinuity, often referred to as the Moho, is identified by refraction seismic surveys. Its depth varies globally, ranging from about 5 to 10 kilometers beneath oceanic crust to 30 to 50 kilometers under continental crust, and up to 70 kilometers in mountain ranges.
