Deep seismic sounding

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000972

A geophysical method using seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection to investigate the structure of the Earth's entire crust and the upper mantle. The technique employs large energy sources, such as powerful explosions, and long receiver arrays with offsets extending for hundreds of kilometers. Data from deep seismic sounding (DSS) are used to map major crustal boundaries like the Conrad and Mohorovičić discontinuities.
