Wadati-Benioff zone
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004071
A planar zone of seismicity that dips into the Earth's mantle beneath an oceanic trench and volcanic arc. It marks the subducting oceanic lithosphere as it descends into the mantle, generating earthquakes due to stress and friction. The depth of earthquakes in this zone can extend to several hundred kilometers, indicating the extent of subduction.
